Urinary Tract
Urine, voided | |

Preparation | Various mild antiseptics around urethra. |
Type, Number or Volume | Clean, mid-stream collection. 10ml minimum. |
Container or Transport Device | Sterile screw cap container. |
Technique | Hold the labia apart or the foreskin retracted. |

Urine, catheterized (or ileal loop) |

Preparation | Clamp drainage tubing. Cleanse tubing with alcohol. |
Type, Number or Volume | 1ml minimum. |
Container or Transport Device | Sterile screw cap container. |
Technique | Aspirate through port with syringe 10-20ml. Special devices for obtaining uncontaminated ileal loop cultures. |
Comments | Suprapubic aspiration may be necessary. |
Bladder urine (suprapubic or cystoscopic) |

Preparation | Cleanse skin prior to aspiration. Indicated in patients with clinical evidence of UTI where collection of clean catch is difficult or not appropriate, neonates, young infants suspected anaerobic infection. |

Technique | Collected by physician by needle aspiration or cystoscopy. |
